After the war, he became governor of Kansas and moved to Duncan in 1871. He built a cotton plantation there and started a school for African Americans which is still open today. The tornado touched down at 6:15 on May 25th 1925, killing 34 people in the town and injuring over 150 others. The tornado turned homes into mangled piles of rubble with roofs torn off or shredded from within. The damage was so extensive that only three years later, construction began on what would become known as "the Duncansville Dam." The dam would provide water to Duncan for local farmers and create jobs for locals while also helping protect nearby towns from floods. The dam also helped shape Duncan into what it is today - an isolated community with strong traditions of education, commerce and agriculture.
The Duncan, Oklahoma Nickelodeon station was a television station located in Duncan, Oklahoma that aired children's programming from the early 1970s to the late 1990s. The station was owned by the Duncan-based TV company KTVK and operated under the name of My Network Television. The first television broadcast from Duncan took place on October 15, 1971 when KTVK signed on with a static signal. The original studios were located at 4141 W. Highway 487 and its transmitter was placed atop an old coal mine east of town. In 1978, My Network Television merged with the local broadcasting company First National Broadcasting Company (FNBC) to form First National Corporation. FNBC then sold KTVK to First National Corporation for $210,000 cash; this made it the first independent television station in Duncan since KTBS had been purchased by KRQC in 1961.
