He named it after his friend and superior, Duncan McDowell, then a brigadier general in the Mexican War who had helped lead an assault on Monterrey that secured American independence from Mexico. The original platted townsite included what is now downtown Duncan and several other areas as well as a small hamlet near where US-60 now crosses the Arkansas River. Duncan's status as county seat changed hands multiple times before it permanently became part of Noble County on January 1, 1907. At that time, most of present-day Noble County lay within Archer County to the south and east while parts of Payne and Morton Counties (to the northwest) were added later. The first permanent settler in what is now Duncan was Fenton Burnett Sr., who founded Burnett’s Hotel/Livery stable there in 1889 when he bought land from Wm Hennigan for $10 per acre ($ today). Burnett served as mayor of Duncan from 1895 to 1897 and 1898 to 1900; he also served as justice of peace for Dodge City from 1892 to 1893. In 1902, two brothers – Jesse Laddingtonand John Wesley Hardin – built a gristmill on Buffalo Creek near what is now town square or Main Street just east of center in central Duncan. They operated it until 1912 when they sold it to Averill Welles who built an Adobe Walls house around it which remain standing today (Welles House Museum). In 1909 local doctor Drury Crouse purchased 6 acres along Canada Road northeast of townsquare for $5 per acre ($today: $54 million)). As medical supplies dried up during World War I due to shortages caused by America's enterprising military strategies abroad, Crouse began operating an oral surgery clinic called “The Cedar Springs Clinic” on his property which would become one of Oklahoma's largest physician-owned businesses serving rural area patients until its closure in 1982 with only 12 beds (Crouse Oral Surgery Museum). Initially opened inside Crouse’s houseopathic practice building located adjacent to present day Highway 60/US-240 across Canada Road from town square - this location would become home audited business records storage facility for Tulsa District Attorney David Butz prior to his appointment as Tulsa Mayor effective December 5th 2001 In 1916nineteen year old schoolteacher Jessie Meeks began teaching instruction at First Presbyterian Church followed by Mrs Earle Bledsoe soon afterwards bringing both Methodism & Presbyterian services under one roof until 1945 When Congregational services were reestablished following World War II through founding member Reverend Oscar Gattis Jr., Centennial School Corporation moved into new facilities adjacent west side Park Avenuenorthwest corner Second Street between Park & University Avenues almost immediately after opening providing high school education thru twenty four years including thirteen seasons under current Principal Drayton Lundstrom
