The town was named for Duncan McDonald, who arrived in Durant in 1887 and started trading goods with the natives. He also built a store and hotel there before becoming Mayor of Durant in 1899. The original town charter granted him "the right to hold political office" and he served two terms before retiring from politics. In 1904, he donated land to the city for development purposes and later served as its first City Manager. The oil industry played a significant role in Duncan’s growth during this time period. Oil drilling began on nearby Una Mesa Island in 1911 and by 1929, Duncan had become one of Oklahoma’s leading oil towns. The area now known as Duncan was developed around this time as well, with several large hotels/motels being built along Main Street and other important thoroughfares. The oilfield workers who profited from this industry left Duncan behind soon after production stopped in 1966; today only a few remaining buildings remain from this era of its history. The town experienced some revitalization efforts over the past few years, but these have been largely unsuccessful; total population growth has ranged between 0 and 2% annually over the past decade or so. Overall, however, Duncan remains an unpretentious community that retains much of its cowboy culture intact; locals still dress formally for events such as dances or funerals (even though most deaths occur within the family).

Duncan is a small town located in Duncan County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,584 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Duncan was J.D. McConnell and his family who arrived in 1872 from Scotland. A post office called McConnell was established in 1875 and remained in operation until 1907. The name of the town derives from General James Duncan, a Confederate general during the American Civil War who later served as governor of Oklahoma Territory. The general's home still stands in the town today and is used for historical purposes. In 1902, Harry Hays donated land to build a high school which would serve local students and eventually become known as Oklahoma State University (OSU). OSU was founded with an initial enrollment of 16 students and it soon became one of the largest universities in America. In 1966, OSU joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and began play as a Division I school football program under head coach Vince Dooley. In 1970, OSU moved to its current location on campus withinintuitive boundaries of Tulsa City Hall which had been built byOklahoma Territorial Governor John Wickersham just before he left office to become Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of Agriculture after losing an election that year. As OU continued to grow both on-campus and off-campus with new athletic facilities such as Neyland Stadium (the home field of Texas A&M Aggies football), Dooley remarked "There isn't much we can't do here." In 2015, tower blocks were built next door to OU'S main campus providing more space for students and staff while still maintaining close proximity to downtown Tulsa where many cultural attractions are located including BOKOs handball stadium which seats over 20,000 people per game., Additionally aluminum buildings have begun being erected throughout much of downtown Tulsa becoming what has come to be known as "The Workplace". Duncan also contains several interesting sites including: J D McConnell House - This house located on South Main Street between 9th Avenue West & 10th Street was built c1875 by J D McConnell who immigrated from Scotland via Ireland with his family Duncan Oktoberfest - This annual beer festival takes place every October near downtown Duncan features events such as agricultural exhibits from various farmers along with craft beers from around the country Bokos Handball Stadium - Home ground of Owen Sound Bombers FC since their formation in 2002 this stadium seats over 20 000 people per game making it one of the largest handball stadiums worldwide Oklahoma State University - One time only university that played NCAA Division I football under Head Coach Vince Dooley where they relocated from 1966 until 2015 when they joined Division II athletics under head coach Mike Gundy
Duncan was founded by Manuel Duncan in 1907. It became a city on November 3, 1907. The population of the city increased to 6,500 in 1912 and reached 11,000 by 1915. In 1916, the city passed an ordinance that banned chewing tobacco. The first post office in Duncan opened in 1908. The first telephone line was installed in 1913. The first restaurant opening in Duncan was the Native American Cafe in 1914. In 1926, the Duncan Chamber of Commerce was organized and it became one of the largest chamber organizations west of Oklahoma City. Indianola College located near Duncan opened its doors as a four-year institution on August 1, 1927. On December 15, 1930, Raymond Latham became mayor of Duncan after serving two terms as alderman for District 2A (the eastern part of town). On January 4, 1933 he was elected to serve his third term as mayor and successfully ran for reelection on November 3, 1933 without winning any extra votes from within his district over challenger Harry Nixon . In 1937 Mayor Latham implemented zoning regulations intended to modernize downtown business districts and improve racial integration which were met with mixed reactions from residents who saw these regulations as infringing on their civil rights
