The name of the town comes from Major General John Duncan who fought in the American Civil War and later became governor of Oklahoma Territory. Duncan is also home to Fairmount Cemetery and Point of Rocks State Park. The town began as a cattle ranching community that grew around a military post established by General John Duncan in 1881.Duncan was named for him and his wife, Emeline, who had come to America from Scotland two years earlier on an overland journey through Mexico and Central America. In 1882, the townsite was platted with five blocks each designed by local architect Wm. Purdy. By 1889, when Indian removal efforts began, only one-third of the original residents remained in the community site; however, it soon became known as one of the most important points along the Santa Fe Trail because it served as a junction connecting eastern Kansas with western Texas before linking up with other trails east to west across this region. With its strategic location beside historic Fort Worth (now Dallas), commerce flourished during prohibition times thanks to nearby grocery stores and convenience stores that serviced area farmers as well as tourists visiting Dodge City (now Wichita Falls) on their way back East from their cattle drives or long trips inland for oil exploration ventures. Businesses closed during World War II when production at nearby Ladd Lake declined due to shortages brought about by rationing; but after hostilities ended and prices returned to normal in 1945, businesses reopened again thanks to increased demand from consumers for both goods produced locally and items imported from Canada or Mexico via railroads running through Wichita Falls’ environs.
