The name "Del" means 'of the Del Norte tribe' and "City" means 'town'. The first people to live in what is now Del City were the Pawnee and their allies who migrated from Kansas during the 1800s. In 1881, Judge John Sibley made land available for settlement on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River. On November 14, 1881, Sibley named his new town after himself (Del City). By 1889, there were 8 settler families living in Del City- six men and four women. In 1907 an increased population of residents caused two ecclesiastical buildings to be erected: First Presbyterian Church with a seating capacity of 350 people and then Methodist Episcopal Zion church with a seating capacity of 500 people. At that time Haskell County had no public school system so children attended private schools until they reached age twelve or thirteen which then moved into Haskell High School which opened in 1909 as an all-girls school under direction of Mrs. Aultman & Miss Hufford until its closure in 1947 when it became coeducational Morrill High School due to Title IX laws of that time; however pre-kindergarten through grade eight continued to be conducted at First Presbyterian Church until 1951 when it was discontinued due to vandalism by students who thought it would devalue their education opportunities elsewhere Some early businesses include J J Hocker's Saloon where pioneer Elisha Hawkins purchased drinks for settlers on their way west (1892); Wagon Wheel grocery store operated by Horace Mullen from 1893-1906; Fenton Drugstore operated by Elias French from 1906-1910; L N Potter & Son blacksmith shop from 1910-1920; Harry Moore Hardware Store operated by George Capps from 1922 thru 1935 Campsite service began operation at Wichita Falls Hotel on Tulsa streets near present day Elmwood Drive in 1925 with Campsite America Corporation providing services for overnight guests including laundry, cooking/eating supplies and RV storage until World War II when campsites became available only for fulltime military members
