Del City is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, there were 3,914 people living in Del City proper and 2,848 living in unincorporated areas surrounding it. The racial makeup of Del City was 98% White and 1% Native American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 1% of the population. The first permanent white settlement in what became Haskell County was made by James Blythe and his family on November 11, 1885 when they founded a post office at "Blythe Landing" on the San Francisco River near present-day Durant. This post office served as an early outpost for settlers who followed their Indian friends westward during that era's great buffalo huntings that swept across much of eastern Oklahoma Territory during the late 1800s This first town site (named after James Blythe himself) had been surveyed by surveyor John Smeaton but never built due to difficulties getting insurance from neighboring Gulf Coast towns which were then enjoying large profitable trade with Mexican traders operating along the Texas border After several years elapsed without new developments being attempted at this point, prospectors led by George Aiken discovered good landlying prospects within three miles (5 km) of Blythe Landing on December 16, 1899 This location would later become known as "Aiken's Corner". Aiken designated a small knoll overlooking this favorable position as "The Point", named for him and fellow prospector Jno. Waddell . In 1902 Aiken sold his interest in The Point land to Harry Haggerty who renamed it "Delville". On July 6, 1907 Haggerty sold his share back to Aiken for $2 per acre . By 1910 there were over 20 white families residing in Delville proper while more than 100 Indians lived off-site nearby including most notably Chief Red Cloud's band led by Chief Little bighorn , also sometimes referred to as Wichita Hills because so many OFHP members had settled there following its purchase from General Sam Houston

Today, only two blocks remain downtown with most of the businesses being relocated to other parts of town since they are no longer profitable to operate in an urban setting. The economy of Del City has changed many times over its history: It has been a cattle drive country until World War II when it became an agricultural center; then it became a manufacturing center before becoming an again rural area; finally it became an industrial center due to oil production during the late 1960s through the early 1980s at nearby Anadarko Petroleum Company which made it one of Oklahoma's leading cities for industry.
