The Del City Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1907. It is the oldest rifle and pistol club in the state of Oklahoma. The original members were local farmers, ranchers, and merchants who wanted to protect their property from squatters, outlaws, and other undesirables. Rifle stocks were a popular means for holding meetings and gatherings. They also used them as part of target practice, which helped promote hunting in the area. In 1916, the club decided to start manufacturing its own rifles and pistols. The first guns were made out of wood; however, over time they began making guns that were made out of metal. In 1936, the Del City Rifle & Pistol Club changed its name to the Oklahoma Rifle Association (ORA). This was due to the fact that at that time there was no such organization in Oklahoma specifically devoted to firearms regulation and licensing. Since then, ORA has been responsible for developing various gun control laws throughout the state of Oklahoma. One such law is the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which states “No person … shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself….” This law is often cited as being one ofairest examples of NRA’s role in supporting gun rights throughout many different jurisdictions around America. Today, ORA remains an active member organization with over 1,000 members located across Oklahoma County including parts of Wichita Falls/Ft Worth/ Claremore/Muskogee Heights/ Jenks etc…..
