Del City, Oklahoma is a city in northwestern Oklahoma. The population was estimated at 37,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name "Del City" is derived from the Wichita language word "del", meaning "a place to sleep." The first white settlers in what is now Del City arrived in 1881. They named their town after one of their own, Delaware County, Pennsylvania native James W. Delaney. In 1907, a group of men from Haskell County founded the city's first school and Post Office in what is now the business district on Northwest Seventh Street NW. By 1912, Del City had two churches - First Methodist and Baptist - as well as a small millinery shop and several other small businesses. However, it wasn't until 1920 that the city's first hospital opened its doors with medical care for residents of nearby Muskogee County and Cherokee Nation (now Oklahoma). That same year saw also the dedication of its only professional football team - Pioneer Redogs - which played its home games at Independence Stadium on Northeast Tenth Street NW until they moved to Tulsa Municipal Stadium in 1968. During World War II,DelCity served as an important military base due to its location within easy reach of Tulsa International Airport which became available following construction of I-40 east-west highway bypassing downtown Tulsa during that war effort. In 1957, when Tulsa assumed jurisdiction over Oklahomas territorial waters off northern Gulf Coast Estates – including parts of Houston Heights –DelCity lost all its municipal services except for street lighting (and water supply) until 1988 when it regained them through a annexation by neighboring Owasso Township. After years without any new development or growth in Del City save for occasional retail projects (such as community center expansions), things changed starting in 2006 when Arvest Bank announced plans to open a large office complex adjacent to Interstate 35E just east of downtown OKC; this led to considerable redevelopment activity throughout central OKC around that time with buildings such as The Ballpark Village completed or under construction while others such as Midtown Crossing planned or under construction
