The Del City community was founded in 1907. The first settler, John P. Green, arrived in what is now Del City on October 4, 1907. At the time, the area was part of the Cherokee Nation and it was not until 1912 that a post office called "Del City" became operational. In 1916, the town was renamed after General George Custer when it was discovered that he had been killed in action during World War I.
