After hostilities ended, its residents resumed their normal lives and businesses reopened soon after liberation from Nazi Germany. In 1951, Del City joined forces with Tulsa to form the Cities of Tulsa metropolitan area which has grown increasingly complex over time. Today, Del City remains one of its most vibrant communities with strong cultural ties to surrounding cities and counties
The area now known as Del City was first settled in the late 1800s. The town was named for Daniel Webster, the 24th U.S. president who died in 1852. In 1907, the city absorbed the adjacent town of Emporia and became one of Oklahoma's largest cities. The population grew rapidly during World War II and by 1948, Del City had reached its peak with a population of over 60,000 people. However, the city's growth slowed in the postwar years as migration to larger towns increased in value south of I-40. In 1974, Del City merged with Muskogee to form Tulsa metropolitan area.
