Claremore was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1887 as a small town on the east bank of Arkansas River just south of present-day Claremore. The settlers named their new community after Methodist preacher John A. Claremonte, who had come to Oklahoma Territory in 1872 to preach Christianity to Native American tribes he had been convert to Christianity. In 1886, when Tulsa County was organized, Claremore became one of its first towns and remained an important community until it lost its city status in 1907 because it failed to meet certain requirements set by county commissioners including having electric lights and sewers installed. The post office was renamed Claremorle in 1907; however, no change took place until 1945 when it became Claremore again due to mergers with other cities within Tulsa County (most notably Jenks) during that time period dubbed " municipal consolidation". As a result of this process, most residents now refer to themselves simply as "Claremontans." In early 2009, Mayor Jim Brewer announced plans for downtown renovation that would include reopening Ofc Richard Wagoner's old jail cells as art galleries and public areas called "The Arts District" –an idea inspired by Wichita Falls' similar initiative which saw redevelopment of downtown into an arts enclave known as Midtown Arts District late in 2008/early 2009 following $22 million dollars spent over four years by then-mayor Greg Stanton

The district constructed an elementary school on the lot in 1936. In 1941, Claremore School District #2 merged with District #1 to create the present-day Claremore School District.
