Claremore is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the east side of the state. The population was 3,036 at the 2010 census. Claremore is part of Muskogee County. The first settler in Claremore was John Aiken who arrived in 1853. The town was platted in 1857 by Wm. Hinton and others as a place to store goods brought over from Texas by wagon trainers. In 1870, Claremore had a population of 350 people and became an early cargo stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1907, McClusky Oil Company founded an oil refinery here and employed 350 people; it operated until 1951 when it merged into ChevronTexaco. The refinery produced asphalt, kerosene, gasoil and other fuel products for local use and shipped its output to other states including Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma City. In response to rural flight during the Dust Bowl era (1930s-1940s), Claremore developed a strong civic foundation that led to community activism during that time period – most notably through support for education initiatives such as establishment of Muskogee County High School in 1937 and creation of the Muskogee Arts Council in 1944 which helped promote artsy interests among locals throughout the Territory of Oklahoma. claretmere oklahoma
