Claremore, Oklahoma is a town located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The population was 17,815 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Claremore County. The city was founded in 1907 by settlers from Illinois and Iowa. It became a small town with a population of around 10,000 before becoming Claremore County seat in 1907. The first holster manufactured in Claremore was made by Wm Hoberman & Sons company which produced holsters for horseback riding and law enforcement use. This company also manufactured revolvers and pistols for the local sheriff’s department as well as other law-enforcement officers. In 1922, Wm Hoberman & Sons merged with another Holster Company to form Hoberman Arms Company which continued production of holsters until 1984 when it merged into Steyr American Corporation. The first post office in Claremore was established on July 24, 1907. The name change to Claremore on November 7, 1907 due to objections from other small communities near by with similar names such as "Clarence" and "Clinton". The original town site was located just south of present day Claremore on what is now US-163 (now I-40). In 1915 the state highway system was completed and US-163 became a toll road which served as an important link between Tulsa and Amarillo through Claremorle. The town's importance continued to increase during World War II when it became home to several military installations including Fort Sill and Camp Blanding. After the war, many businesses moved into Claremorle from other parts of Oklahoma because of its booming economy. In 1970, Claremorle had over 1,000 residents and boasted both a high school and college level education programTSU Community College & First International Bank. Claremore was founded in 1892 by John and Emma Bates. The city was named after the Claremore Ranch, which had been patented to them by the Indian Territory government. The Bateses were farmers who started out in nearby Muskogee. They developed a small town on the edge of the ranch and gradually added more settlers over time. In 1907, they moved their entire population to Claremore when an offer came through from AT&T for land east of Tulsa. Claremore became one of Tulsa's first neighborhoods and remains an important part of its cultural heritage today.
