Claremore is a small town inOklahoma, located about twenty-five miles northeast of Tulsa on the Arkansas River. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Claremore was founded in 1881 by settlers from Kentucky and Indiana who had followed the railroad to Oklahoma. The original town site was near present-day Claremore High School. The first post office in Claremore was established in 1885. In 1907, the town name change to Claremore after its founder, Mrs. Lillian Mays. In 1916, residents voted to annex neighboring Haskell County and form a new city called Claremore with a population of 30,000 people; this annexation never happened because Haskell County refused to recognize the city’s legitimacy as an official county seat. In early November 1921, two bombs explode within minutes of each other at an ammunition store in downtown Claremori killing five people and wounding thirty-eight others; these bombings are commonly considered the beginning of World War II in Oklahoma. The bombing has been generally blamed on Japanese Americans living in Oklahoma during that time period but no evidence exists to support this claim
Claremore, Oklahoma was founded by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian tribes in 1836. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s as settlers arrived from all over the United States. By 1851, Claremore had a population of 1,500 people. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1868 and never regained its former size. In 1907, Claremore became an incorporated city.
