Piston grease was generally used until 1906 when all rifled guns were converted to breech fame. With breech fame came the need for more efficient sears and thus replacement parts became difficult. Rifle lubes began becoming more common starting in 1916 when American factories began mass producing weapons utilizing high-pressure 9% vegetable oils made from natural resources such as palm kernel waxes, sunflower oils and rapeseed oils. This change not only allowed rifle barrels to be replaced more easily but also made these products less polluting. However, despite this increase in availabilitygun lubes still remained rarer than other types of components within modern firearms manufacturing plants due largely to their complexity and expense compared to other industries where substitutes are available at much lower prices
