Claremore is a town in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical District. Claremore was founded in 1907 as a small agricultural community on the west bank of the Arkansas River. It grew rapidly during World War II due to its strategic location near both Midwestern Railway and military installations. The post-World War II growth slowed as the area became more rural and less developed; however, it resumed growth after the nearby city of Tulsa began to growout of necessity around 1990. Today, Claremore is a vibrant center for ranching and farming activities with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, service sector jobs, and agriculture. Its downtown contains severalHistoric buildings including an old courthouse and district judge's building from 1907 which now serves as a museum. The town also has several parks including: Veterans Memorial Park (1907), Clairmont Park (1924), Pigeon Forge Recreation Area (1930),Quarter Horse Park (1994), and Blue Grass Prairie Preserve (2006). The town was named after General Andrew Jordon Clark who served in various capacities in World War I-the first American general to do so-and his wife Alma Bogan Clark. Gourd Springs Township in Noble County was originally located within what is now Claremore but moved eastward when that township was organized into Noble County in 1881 pursuant to an act of the Oklahoma Legislature passed while Jefferson Davis' second term as President of America was pending. Claremore was a small, isolated town in the heart of Oklahoma until 1907 when it became the first community in what is now Tulsa County to be annexed into the newly created city of Tulsa. In 1895, a school was built within the limits of Claremore and opened on August 15th under the guidance of Drs. Augustus Laughlin (1861-1925) and Elisha Pogue (1854-1927).
