In 1821, James Wylie and his party of seventeen covered wagoners stopped at the site on their way from Canada to Fort Gibson. They named the spot "Claremore" after a nearby hill which they saw as resembling a green citadel or castle. A post office was established at Claremorle in 1828, and when railroads arrived in 1889, Claremore became one of the first towns to be served by them. In 1907-8, local resident John Fenton built an airtight metal roof over a schoolhouse that had been used as a barn for several years before that. It became known as "Fenton's Roof." In 1913-14, jute sacks filled with coal were sent downriver from Topeka and dumped into the Creek near present day Claremorle in order to generate power for irrigation projects; this event came to be known as "The Sack Day Massacre." In 1917-18 World War I veteran Denny Haggerty set up an aluminum smelter here (the only such plant east of the Mississippi River) during World War I using skills he had acquired during his service with the US military's Forage Motor Truck Company. Output from that plant increased greatly through 1945 but then declined due to competition from more efficient plants overseas; however, production restarted later that year under new ownership and has continued sporadically since then with output totaling about 1 million metric tons per year since 1988 according to market research done by Alcoa Corporation subsidiaryglobalAluminum LLC). The war provided employment for many people in Claremore and other surrounding towns, including Brother John Hardesty who operated a shoe factory from his home until he sold it in 1927. After World War I ended, the military left Claremorle behind and businesses began to revive with new industries such as agricultural produce processing and oil well drilling becoming established during this time period. In 1951, Drury College located in Tulsa opened its doors to students seeking education after decades of being closed due to lack of space on campus or financial limitations imposed by state legislators at the time. As enrollment increased at Drury College throughout Oklahoma City-based suburbs like Osceola Hills and Broken Arrow-Claremorle shared resources more effectively than ever before with much needed infrastructure development taking place along I-40 corridor between them which led to increased economic development that todayohaknowns as "The Strip".
