The first settler to arrive in what is now Claremore was James Fenton who arrived on November 3, 1839. He named his land Cherokee County which became part of Tulsa County when that county was organized on March 4, 1907. On July 17, 1907, Claremorians founded a new town called Claremore on an tract of land they had purchased from Washita Indian Reservation east of present day Claremore Boulevard and north of US 362 near the current site of Interstate 40 between I-40 and State Highway 66. The town was renamed after General William Tecumseh Sherman who had commanded American forces during World War II and helped win that war for America As early as 1847 black people were living within some radius of what is now Claremore because slave traders bought them into slavery across the Arkansas River then transported them to Indian Territory where they were auctioned off to white settlers or sold into slavery themselves On May 14th, 1861 unincorporated territory east of Tulsa county line (now Muskogee County) west of US 362 become incorporated as Orchard Township under name 'Claremorian Settlement'. It should be noted that this incorporation did not create any township boundaries within Orchard Township but simply added another name to the existing township list In 1872 school district No 1 formed around village/township boundaries with 8 schools; JA Clayton School #1 thru #8 serving pupils grades Kindergarten thru 8th grade On October 15th 1887 First Congregational Church erected by local residents using bricks scavenged from old Lancaster Presbyterian church burned down by Cimarron Indians while settlement core was being built . Ground broken for Second Congregational Church on same location two weeks later . On December 12th 1888 Union Pacific Railroad completed line through town giving it railway access for first time since 1800s
