Choctaw was the first Indian reservation in Oklahoma. The Choctaw Nation was founded in 1819 by Chief Osage and his followers. In 1907, the United States Congress passed the Dawes Act which allotted land to Native Americans based on their numbers and resources. The Choctaw Nation lost 1/3 of its original land under the act.

After being moved to Indian Territory in 1907 under US General George Armstrong Custer's orders for "civilized" Indians, most of the tribe joined forces with Confederate forces during World War II against US forces occupying their land. Most notably, Chief Osage leader Red Cloud led a successful resistance campaign against federal troops at Camp Supply in Ledbetter Township until his death in 1945;[1][2] during this time several hundred Choctaw also enlisted in the military.[3] In 1984, much to local protest due to raised water prices caused by state oversimplification policies,[4] voters passed a referendum authorizing one dollar per resident per year for water services (which would have been raised if it had been approved). However, policy changes subsequent to passage of this law increased costs again and forced an emergency budget override on November 2nd which ended any possibility for further increases over that $205 million budget without increase voter turnout or amendments from legislators (the measure failed anyway).[5][6] Today's economy largely depends upon oil production from nearby wells but there are also significant manufacturing sectors including trucking and textiles. A large number of jobs have been created since 2000 through economic development projects such as OKC Energy Partners' troubled cement plant near McAlester which has resulted in more than 5500 new jobs statewide according to state data;[7][8][9][10] other recent successes include two major expansions at Walmart: one opening up space next door – making it possible for full-time employment – and another creating tens of thousands of jobs across retail across four states after Walmart opened its owndistribution center outside Wichita Falls Texas;[11][12][13]) bringing total job growth statewide since 2000 to nearly 30%,000 positions just shy of 4 times annual average job growth rate nationally (about 2%).
