The Choctaw Nation Indian reservation is located in east-central Oklahoma. The reservation spans over 4,500 square miles and is home to more than 1,200 treaty and non-treaty Native American nations. By 1870, the Canadian immigrants had outgrown Kuskokwim and erected a more permanent establishment which they called Fort Peck. In 1875, Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States and issued Executive Order 4951 which dividedOklahoma into Indian Territory and Mexican Territory. The order stated that all Native American citizens within the Indian Territory were to be treated as Indians subject to all tribal laws and regulations including land ownership, hunting rights, education, fishing opportunities, etc.. In 1907, Choctaw leaders decided to move their tribe from its original location in east Oklahoma to a new reservation in far West Texas. As part of this relocation effort, representatives from several tribes gathered at Fort Worth's Eagle Hotel fora conference entitled "The Plan for adjustments with Mexico." At this meeting it was decided that the Choctaws should establish a new school on their newly established reserve so that children could receive traditional Native American education. On February 15th of that year, 468 Choctaws boarded trains at Fort Worth's Elmira Depot bound for Wichita Falls where they would disembark at Toyotomi Station before continuing north along Interstate 35 until they reached their destination - Waco Ridge Reservation nearpresent-day Wichita Falls. Waco Ridge Reservation was selected because it offered enough land without being too close to any urban areas or white settlements so that the native people could continue practicing their self-reliant lifestyle while also receiving access to essential services such as healthcare and education while outside of contact with civilization
