Choctaw is a small town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Choctaw is located in the eastern corner of Choctaw County and is bordered to the north by Woodsboro and to the east by Vinita. It has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The community sits on an embankment that rises from the Arkansas River and ends near Northwest High School. The first white settlers in what would become Choctaw County were prospectors who traveled through this region in 1853-54 looking for new oil wells to exploit. In 1912-13 an effort was made to reopen the old Wichita Pipeline (now known as I-35) from Guthrie through Tulsa into Choctaw County but this project also failed after being opposed by local residents who felt their ancestral lands would be impacted by such development. A coal mine opened near present day Woodward Avenue in 1915 but closed within one year because of high prices for coal caused by WORLD WAR I; however, other mines did not close until after World War II when demand for coal decreased due to increased technology advancements and advances in other industries such as energy production from oil shale deposits). By 1957 there were only 2 housing units left standing on original ground built for 100 during early 1900s boomtown days before all declined over time with various fires including one which destroyed most buildings 1924 leaving little evidence remaining despite efforts several times since then originally started back then again starting about 2003 when some renovation/repair work finally started following request done many years ago now finally finished up very well actually pretty much turned around really thanks mostly people who are involved actually even though we had some challenges along way like some things that just didn’t pan out or couldn’t happen didn’t want anyone get hurt over something like that so that was good actually
