Beginning in 1881 whenOklahoma Territory was created from parts of Texas and Mexico following the Mexican-American War, Cherokee traders started moving into what would become Okla., buying land where Indian tribes had lived for centuries before being forced westward during the Trail of Tears process that followed the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1907 Choctaw leader Tecumseh Sherman led his people westward after fleeing Arkansas because he believed that their new homeland would be more prosperous than any they had found east of the Mississippi River. After traveling through Kansas into Nebraska Territory before crossing into Oklahoma Territory on July 20th 1907 they set up camp near present day CHOCTAW village on October 12th 1957 known as "the Opening." By 1959 all but two members of our nation's original tribal group were deceased; however we continue to live off our lands through oral tradition passed down through our descendants who are currently living scattered throughout many parts of America including Oklahoma City area

The Choctaw community of Killeen was founded in 1892 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to Oklahoma looking for land to farm. The first white settlers in Choctaw were Englishmen: James McAteer and his brother John McAteer. They arrived in 1881 and built a cabin on the present site of Killeen. There were no schools until 1907 when one was erected by Mrs. Arita Hanks and her husband, Rev. Denton Hickson. In 1907, the school district formed and Choctaw became part of it In 1907, the town post office was established at its present location which served unincorporated parts ofchoctaw county until 1935 when it became an incorporated city with its own post office A fire destroyed most of the homes in downtown Killeen on Aug 26th 1904 but not before local citizens had put together a fund to rebuild On Dec 12th 1904 voters approved incorporation as a city with its own government The first mayor was Wm Sibley who served three terms from 1905 to 1911 and then Jno Crain who served one term from 1912 to 1915 . He later returned to rural life
