Choctaw is a town in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,463 at the 2010 census. The Choctaw Nation of Indians is headquartered in Choctaw. The Choctaw tribe was founded in 1836 by Chief Joseph and his group of western Apache warriors. They first settled along the Arkansas River near present-day McAlester. In 1840, they moved to what is now Choctaw Territory, east of the Kansas River. In 1851, they ceded their reservation to the U.S., and continued to live on it until 1907 when all their land had been annexed by Tulsa County. In 1907, due to increasing restrictions placed on Indian tribes by the government under President Grover Cleveland's Indian Reorganization Act of 1887, most of the Choctaw tribe withdrew from federal jurisdiction and formed their own nation with headquarters at Choctawa Village north of downtown Tulsa. That same year, the village was renamed Cherokee Village after the Cherokee people who used it as a trading post before Removal began in 1830 following Creek War (1829–1830). The town nameChoctaw comes from two words: Chichi or "chief" and ta'keerah or "town". The word chichi means "chiefs" or "managing chiefs." The word ta'keerah means "town". This tribal name for Cherokee Village may have derived from an earlier French name meaning "the junction of two rivers", which refers to its location between both forks of the Arkansas River watershed (present-day Tulsa County and Oklahoma City metropolitan area).
