A Presbyterian church was built there in 1912 and became known as First Baptist Church of Choctaw County (now First Missionary Baptist Church). There are still many homes from when Choctaw was first established preserved within the community today. The fort served as an important strategic location for Confederate forces during that conflict and later played a significant role in helping American forces victory over Japanese forces at BattleofFortHickory on November 17, 1944.
