Gun swivels have been around for a long time. They were first designed to keep firearms from rotating on their mounts, and then later became popular for use with rifles. Inhabitants of what is now Choctaw County were ancestors of the Chickasaws who lived downriver from them before migrating to this area about 1824-25 according to one report. They started clearing land hereabouts in 1838 when they arrived after experiencing difficulty finding enough water to irrigate their crops near Wahoo on Lake Superior.
