Choctaw is a small town in Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Choctaw County. The population was 1,531 at the 2000 census. The town is located in southeastern Oklahoma on the Choctaw River. The name "Choctaw" comes from the Creek language and means " people who go down to drink." The first European settlers in what is now Choctaw County were Frenchmen who arrived in 1682 as part of La Salle's Louisiana Expedition. They named their new land for Saint Christopher, patron saint of travelers and merchants. In 1836, Indian Territory was organized into three districts: Cherokee District (southwest), Muskogee District (northwest), and Choctaw District (northeast). In 1837, ChoctAWidth became its own district due to how it was split off from Cherokee District. In 1907, the Oklahoma Legislature passed a bill creating an Indian school system within Indian Territory which would educate Native American children from ages five to eighteen years old. The first Indian School opened in ChoCTawa in 1908 and educated students until 1925 when it closed because of budget cuts by then-Governor John Branson. On July 24, 1907, white man George Wigglesworth killed four black men while performing a robbery near what is now Tulsa during what has been called one of the most notorious crimes in American history; although he had nothing to do with Negro slavery or anything related thereto., Wigglesworth has come to be known as the "Crowed Eagle Murderer." This event generated international notoriety which led to stricter laws against lawlessness by whites on Indians along with increased vigilance by white officials throughout the country against such activities.–Wikipedia
