In 1907–08 troops led by General Sherman burned down their village to prevent its destruction by squatters on adjoining land granted to them as part of a treaty made with the Seminole Tribe in 1896. In 1934, Oklahoma became a state and Choctaw County lost its county seat to McAlester (Oklahoma City). However, many residents staged boycotts against McAlester's annexation because they felt that their community would be lost if McAlester became a city without any relation to their culture or history

The four hundred Cherokees who remained were forced to march south on foot through central Texas for destination unknown. They arrived at Fort Gibson on July 10th, 1830 after spending two weeks refreshing themselves at Wichita Falls before marching northward into Indian Territory under hard conditions traveling over difficult terrain that included open water crossings and appalling weather conditions. The Removal Act was an act of coercion by Ulysses S. Grant which led to mass starvation among Cherokee citizens due to lack of food supplies brought over with the army units conducting the removal process. In total, downward migration from Cherokee nation totaled almost 2 million people during this time period including some 1 million Cherokees who crossed into Mexican territory prior to Removal while others remained behind within Indian Territory until 1881 when they finally received citizenship rights
