Choctaw, Oklahoma is a small town in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Choctaw County were Elisha Blythe and his family who arrived in 1871. They named their new settlement "Cottonwood" after cottonwoods that they saw near their farm house on the Arkansas River. The name Choctaw was chosen because it sounded like a word used by the Cherokee people for themselves (ki-tow). Cottonwood served as the local post office from 1872 to 1886 and then again from 1907 to 1917. In 1881, A.L. Stephens established a blacksmith shop in what is now northwest corner of First Street and McClure Avenue in northeast Choctaw Township where he also raised chickens and hogs. In 1905, Wm Hargrave opened an undertaker business on east corner of Second Street and State Highway 3 south of town near present day Anadarko High School; this business continued until 1951 when it closed due to low sales volumes during World War II shortages of funeral supplies nationwide caused by American involvement in that war. Also starting around 1905 were several other small businesses throughout downtown Choctaw before prohibition began its full sweep through America in 1920 which led to many early closures of local businesses including Stephens' smithy as well as most other downtown businesses between 1920-1925 due to prohibition enforcement efforts by law enforcement officers located mainly within city limits outside Airport boundaries; however some reopened after repeal beginning 1933 under various names such as "The Old Courthouse", "Hargrave's Drug Store", etc.; these reopening dates are approximate based upon surviving records or oral history interviews with former employees/owners who recall their experiences during those periods at least somewhat accurately In response to rapidly growing demand for agricultural products throughout much of the Great Plains region following Repeal (1920), farmers set up large plantations along the Arkansas River Valley northward into Kansas City County; these plantations played an important role not only supplying food for American troops fighting against Imperial Japan but also supporting heavy industry associated with that war effort directly or indirectly including munitions manufacturing plants located there such as Mayflower Arsenal—one reason why much older mounds near present day Wichita Falls were recently discovered nearby while conducting archaeological digs adjacent to Interstate 35W just west of town) As agriculture became more specializedized and production increasingly moved away from open field farming towards increasingly mechanized approaches (eager buyers looking for more consistent quality output instead of variable yields per acre), independent ranchers began setting up ranching operations across wide swaths of eastern Oklahoma Territory – stretching all the way down into Texas – specifically targeting cattle drives meeting especially high demand for hides, meat and wool withinancertain areas among Anglo-American settlers seeking accessorial land grants resulting primarily from perceived strategic vulnerabilities posed by Mexico’s growing Railroad empire on both sides of the border While some early ranchers did try to engage Mexican forces directly (ejecting cavalry units mounted upon horseback toward certain keyMexican settlements located along river valleys leading into Texas), most ranching operations centered around keeping animal herds penned up inside specific ranches rather than trying to venture too far out into Mexican territory .
