ManyChoctaws chose to move west and live with whites instead of facing death at Johnson’s hands. In 1865-1866, 3 companies of United States Cavalry were stationed at Fort Gibson to protect Indian Territory from depredations by speculators and lawless elements living east of the Arkansas River junction point known as “the Forks” near present day Wichita Falls, Texas In 1868-1869 wagonloads full of goods belonging to Missionaries Father Francisco Javier de Paula and Father José María Arcángel were destroyed when two stagecoach drivers stopped their travel north through Indian Territory on their way back from Wichita Falls to Tulsa OK As a result Of this event many Chocoataws decided they would rather stay with their people than leave their homes After years[of] effort by local farmers trading goods with Cherokee traders we have been able to purchase our own piece[of]land surrounding our old home place about 6 miles due east from where we currently reside

In 1907, Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act, which created new reservations across much of North America for Native Americans who had been living east of the Mississippi River as well as on lands west of Mexico City. TheChoctaw people continued to resist US encroachment until World War II when they ceded most of their easternOklahoma land to government control as part of a program known as forced assimilation. The area that is now Choctaw County was part of Creek Nation until it was ceded by Creek War Chief Tecumseh to the United States in 1836 as part of the Treaty of Fort Gibson which ended the Creek War. In 1881, Congress passed an act creating Choctaw Indian Territory and giving it to the tribe for their own protection after settlers began moving into what are today eastern OK and western TX counties. In 1907, Cherokee Nation merged into US government so all Native American nations were combined into one entity under common management but this did not happen forChoctaw County as Cherokee Nation continued to exist separately among various tribal groups within US government until 1970 when they finally amalgamated into one organization calledthe Cherokee Nation Governmental Entity
