Choctaw is a community located in Choctaw County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 4,853 at the 2010 census. The name Choctaw comes from the Chukchi language word "kuchin" meaning "water." The town of Choctaw was founded in 1875 by white settlers and named after General Andrew Jackson's Creek Nation. In 1907, the town became a city and was renamed Choctaw City in 2002. TheChoctaw City School District serves students in grades K-12. The first post office for Choctaw was established on October 25, 1875, and remained open until it closed on December 5, 1907. The first settler to reside in what is now ChoctAW was John Bogue who arrived in 1876. He built a cabin on the edge of the creek which served as his home until he sold it to Captain George Wickersham in 1888. Captain Wickersham donated land for a school which opened on January 6th, 1889 under the name of Newton Female Seminary & Business College. After two years of operations were completed there were only twelve pupils enrolled with Mrs Watt teaching classes part time while also working as an errand girl for her mother-in-law Mrs Fenton when not attending class full time at Newton Female Seminary & Business College; however this small school grew to become one of most popular schools within Harrison County during its early years due to its excellent instruction quality along with ample space; however during World War II manyStudents left for military service leaving behind their educational opportunities which then made up for lost time later when demand increased again following reopening of Newton Female Seminary & Business College following hostilities ended In 1946 wife Mrs Fenton died suddenly leaving young daughter Dorothy as headmistress Of New ton Female Seminary And Business College becoming known as Dorothy Fenton choktawa Elementary School today
