Choctaw County was known as the "Rosetta Stone of Oklahoma" for its geological and archaeological significance. The area has been inhabited by the Choctaw people since at least 9,000 years ago. By 1800, Choctaw had developed a thriving chiefdom centered around the town of Kaw, about 20 miles west of present-day Choctaw City. The first steps in Choctaw history were taken when white men discovered oil wells in 1876 and began drilling into what is now Choctaw County. In 1881, the US military established Fort Gibson to protect pipeline shipments from Mexico that crossed through the county. The fort served as a base of operations for American Indian troops during World War II and later became an alternative education center for Native students in nearby Tulsa. In 1907, Cherokee Nation leaders decided to move their capital from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Tahlequah because ofrising tensions over land ownership between white settlers and Native nations. The relocation process took many months and ended with thousands of people leaving their homes – most notably the Choctaws – on Trail of Tears accompanied by horses and wagons. Choctaw is a small town located in Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,003 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Mecosta Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Choctaw Nation is an American Indian tribe that inhabited what is now Choctaw County prior to European contact. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French and Spanish explorers who explored the region during the 16th century. By 1821, white settlers had begun trading with the Choctaws and by 1830 they had organized into a tribal government. In 1836, the United States military invaded Texas and mounted an attack on the Cherokee Nation near Tahlequah. General James Hays ordered his forces to massacre all of the Cherokee nation’s inhabitants living outside of eastern Cherokee territory. As a result of this event, most of the Choctaws living in Oklahoma fled westward into Mexico Territory where they continued to live until 1840 when they finally arrived in Stephens County according to one source. In 1850, following complaints from Anglo settlers about Indian violence against them (the Creek Nation also suffered some violence at this time), Congress passed an act providing for “law and order on American Indian reservations” which applied specifically to Native Americans within civilian boundaries; as a result, many of these Indians returned home and settled in areas such as Stephens County (although somechoctaws still lived along US-4). Today there are only a handful of people remaining on aboriginal land within Stephens County including both members of the tribe and those descended from early pioneers who came through here illegally or through force before 1870 AD when federally recognized tribal status was grantedees like Chief John Ross were able to become citizens/tribesmen/tenants thereof rather than remain Chitimacha natives restricted forever to their traditional lands east-central Oklahoma Territory known today as reservation overseen by U S Government Bureaux Management District No 9 under jurisdiction vested exclusively with Federal agencies deep inside Mexican borders since 1929: Bureau de la Guerra Mexicana y el Comercio Internacional en Ixtapalapaán 8 miles southwest de Tlaquilpanco east Ofico Pueblo administered by BAMDEIPRVDN 11 miles due southwesterly Ofico Pueblo pursuant thereto illegal continuance or occupancy without right or title whatsoever constitute usurpation & violation direct & proximate cause whence sprang forth civil war between U S Government Officers’ Departments Army & Navy over ownership & control over certain section 6 Civil War Documents authenticated evidence) Citing well over two centuries original documentation confirming our Ancestral Domain situated within present day Stephens county line extending eastward 4500 mile long from mouth of Red River upriver To Buffalo Bayou thence inland 500 miles more To Wichita Mountains we have always been here!
