Chickasha is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the Arkansas River. The population was 1,541 at the 2000 census. Chickasha is part of the Muskogee County seat. The town was founded in 1892 by settlers from Arkansas and named after Chickasha, an Indian chief who helped lead them to Oklahoma. The first post office in Chickasha was established in 1893 and served until 1903. In 1907, the town had a population of 153 and became a city when it annexed neighboring townships. In 1912, Chickasha adopted a new municipal form with a mayor-council government. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in 1916 but didn't destroy the community as much as anticipated; however, many businesses were never rebuilt due to financial difficulties that followed during World War I and II. In 1955, Chickasha annexed Davenportville which had been abandoned for some time after its residents left for other rural communities nearby. Afterward, Davenportville saw rapid growth with businesses opening up including truck stops, service stations and hotels along Interstate 35W between Tulsa and Wichita Falls. As this industry grew more numerous and expansive than what existed in either of the original municipalities within Chickasha annexations (Davenportville or Wichita Falls), tension began to grow among both populations over who controlled "the territory." This led to increasing violence between these two groups as their economies diverged greatly
