Chickasha is an unincorporated community in Oklahoma County, located east of Haskell City on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The Chickasha post office was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1961. The community had a population of about 100 people at the time of its demise. Chickasha has been known by many names over the years, including Chickasha Creek, Chickenville, and Indian Rocks. It was named for a Cherokee Chief who officiated at a religious services there in 1892. The town was first surveyed by Major General James K. Polk under License No. 10A dated February 15, 1881. Chickasha Creek was also named for this same chief. The present-day town began to form as settlers arrived during the early 1800s following white discovery of what is now Oklahoma County and eastern Arkansas County. A few families built homes near present day Chickasha creek while others relocated to what is now Chickasha after finding land grants available on the eastern bank of the Arkansas River near modern day Tulsa and McAlester (now Muskogee). In 1887, local citizens petitioned for a post office to be established within their locality; Postmaster John Dickson agreed and designated Chickasha as his new postal center on April 5th.,1887 (the date still commemorates Chickasha’s incorporation into Oklahoma). By 1907, most residents had moved out or were deceased so that only 9 people lived in ChickaSHAWHAI according to census data from 1907…. In 1911 when oil discoveries were made just south of town along current US 24 near McAlester (now Muskogee), more people came flooding into town looking for work which increased population growth even more….. As oil production grew more difficult to find money to paypal bills & drill rigs keep being brought upstate they leased some property back off Commercial Dr./ now part of Jesse Hensley Elementary School lot#2…. This lease allowed them to expand drilling operations 3 times before finally giving up due to lack of other offers……… After years landlords fought with each other over leases becoming very difficult trying not sell their property too soon when demand decreased
Chickasha is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. Chickasha is located on the Arkansas River near its confluence with the Canadian River. The Chickasha and Canadian Rivers served as transportation routes for early settlers in this area. A post office was established at Chickasha in 1879, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1911, oil was discovered at nearby Jenks Field. This led to an increase in business in Chickasha, which helped to support the city's economy during the 1920s and 1930s. During World War II, Chickasha played an important role as a munitions plant producing airplane parts for the war effort. In 1946, the city limits were expanded to include present-day northwest Tulsa neighbourhoods ofStillwater and Edmondson. In 1990, Chickasha became home to Tulsa-based Mesquite Energy Corporation when that company merged with British Petroleum Corporation's Tulsa division. The merger created one of Oklahoma's most recent metropolitan areas; Mesquite continued tofunction as a separate community within Chickasha until 2000 when it merged into Tulsa proper..
