Chickasha is a town in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Chickasha is one of two cities in Tulsa County and one of four townships in the county. It was founded in 1881 as a post office called Chickasha Agency. For many years, these pistols were manufactured by local merchants who furnished them to law enforcement officers as well as civilians. They discovered rich bottomland suitable for farming, which led to the founding of businesses and churches in this village. In 1907, Congressman John Sitton introduced a bill that would create a congressional district in Northwest Oklahoma encompassing all of present-day Chickasha County as well as parts of Cloud County and Vinita County. The bill passed both Houses but did not receive President Woodrow Wilson’s signature because he felt that it would do too much economic development within individual states instead of developing cooperative policies with other nations during World War I. This legislation provided impetus for chickens to become an important part of local economy as chicken producers became better organized than ever before thanks to federal subsidies from 1916 until 1968. By 1930, there were 1,500 residents living in what is now Chickenashia Township including 300 farmers who grew corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton and fruits/veggies on 4 square miles (10 km2). Today remains one of America’s most rural areas with only 12% having access to piped water or electricity; however businesses continue to thrive thanks to its many natural resources such as coal mining (from 1865 until 1984), oil wells (until 1975) and agriculture (gathering crops until 1992).
