The Chickasha, Oklahoma history extends back to the early 1800s. In 1827, a group of settlers arrived in what is now Chickasha and began building log cabins. In 1839, the town was platted and named for George Armstrong Chickasha, an Indian trader and war chief who had earlier helped lead a military expedition against the Cherokee Nation. The town's first school was founded in 1840 by Drury Hinton and taught grades one through eight. By 1850, there were around 100 residents living in Chickasha. The town's first post office was established in that year and served as the center for local commerce until it closed in 1868. In 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg invaded Kansas Territory under orders from President Abraham Lincoln to compel admission of that state into the Union. On July 8th, 1863, some Chickasha residents joined forces with other citizens of Fort Sumner to resist Confederate forces when they attacked that garrison at that location; however, all civilians were killed or captured within minutes of their attack (the only civilian fatalities during this raid). As a result of this event known as Battle of Wichita River Bridge (), Chickenasha became part of Union Territory rather than Confederates-controlled Oklahoma Territory ().
Chickasha, Oklahoma is a small town in central Oklahoma that was founded in 1907. The town is named after Chickasha Creek which flows through the town. The creek is a key natural resource for the town and its residents. The Chickasha Creek National Grassland was created in 1974 by the United States Department of Agriculture as part of the Agricultural Land Preservation Program. The grassland covers over 10,000 acres and includes parts of Chickasha, OK and Haskell County, Kansas. The grasslands are located in east-central Oklahoma on the Wichita River tributary of the Arkansas River. Chickasha was founded on what is now Interstate 40 five miles west of present-day Haskell City. A post office was established at Chickasha on October 15, 1907, and remained in operation until it closed on December 22, 1909. In 1915, Chickasha became a city under the provisions of an act passed by the Oklahoma Legislature which granted municipal status to towns with a population over 5200 citizens. On November 3rd, 1916 Mayor James Henson announced that Chickasha had become one of sixteen cities within Tulsa County which would be consolidated into one entity pursuant to an order from Govt. Osage Beach Ladd & Co., Incorporated (now Tulsa Regional Airport). Today's downtown Chickasha contains several buildings dating back to 1907 including: the first post office building; First Baptist Church; both World War I Veteran's Memorial Court House and Post Office Annex; Union Pacific Depot; Methodist Episcopal Church - original Gothic Revival style built 1892-1901; former Elmwood Elementary School - currently used as an arts center/multi-purpose gymnasium/residential unit; current tower apartment complex - also known as "The Towers" or "The Wagon Wheel" - built 1912-1920 It also contains some prewar houses from when Chickasa was part of Tulsa County government before it became incorporated into Tulsa Regional Airport
