The name "Chickasha" comes from the Kiowa word Chi-kahla meaning "riverbank." The first post office in Chickasha opened on December 12, 1907. In 1915, Chickasha had a population of 575 people and it grew to 1,868 by 1920. The growth of Chickasha was due to its location at the crossing of two important rivers: the Arkansas River and White Earth Creek. In 1922, chicken farming became an important factor in local economy because chickens could be raised more quickly than beef or pork animals could be produced; this led to increased demand for chicken eggs and also for live chickens that could be sold during market seasons (e.g., during Easter).
