The name change came after Chickasha residents objected to McNaught's proposal to rename the community after General James McNaught, who had died during World War I. Chickasha began developing as a farming community during the 1920s with landowner Wm. Akins selling produce to local merchants and farmers. In 1927, Chickasha established its own school system which became one of the largest in Oklahoma Territory; it operated until 1929 when it merged with nearby Durant's School District #1 (later renamed Muskogee). In 1939, Chickasha annexed adjacent acreage east of town from McLaughlin Township for future development into what would become known as "Merritt Ranch". When first developed, Merritt Ranch included citrus orchards, soybean farms and other agricultural properties totaling . After years of discussion between ranchers and then-Mayor Denny Hoyer over whether or not to annex their land for development purposes (Hoyer convinced them to), Chickasha annexed Merritt Ranch on July 1, 1949; annexation led to an increase in population from 2 hundred fifty-four people at the time of incorporation to 3 thousand by 1960 due largely to increased access to transportation provided by US-24 which bypassed town limits
