The first post office in Chickasha was established on December 1, 1902 by Rufus Latham with mail sent from Wichita Falls via stagecoach to Fort Riley for delivery to miner's families living along Kiowa Trail No., including those living at the old fort which had been abandoned since 1862 when it was surrendered by Indian forces under General David Hunter to General Sherman during the Civil War
Chickasha is a small town in the panhandle of Oklahoma. It is located on the eastern edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area and has a population of 3,007 as of the 2010 census. The Chickasha community was founded in 1907 by pioneers who came to what is now Chickasha from Canada. The first settlers were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived in 1887. The community was named after Anna Chisholm, the wife of Reverend John Chisholm, one of the founders of Wichita Falls, Texas. Chickasha grew rapidly and by 1907 had a school, store, post office and three churches. By 1944 there were only two structures left in Chickasha – a church and an old way station which served as village hall for many years until it was replaced by the present day courthouse building. In 1945, Chickasha voters passed an ordinance that established a public library system within the community. The library became operational on October 15th, 1947 and currently contains over 1 million items including books, periodicals and movies. In 2003-2004 local officials renovated or replaced all five original buildings within the village limits including our current courthouse building which was built in 1923 when Chickasha had just six residents
