Chickasha is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Chickasha is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Chickasha community began as a post office on July 8, 1886. It was named for Chicka-asha Creek which flows through the town. The creek's name had been given to it by white settlers who thought the local Native American tribe might eat some of their game if they found any near their settlement. In 1907, Chickasha incorporated as a city and became known as "the boomtown of Muskogee County." In 1916, Chickasha was renamed for General John Fetterman in honor of his victory over Confederate forces at Monterrey Hill during the Mexican–American War. During World War II, Chickasha produced munitions for the war effort and served as an airfield for military planes flying fighter attacks against Japanese targets in the Pacific Theater. After hostilities ended in 1945, Chickasha reverted back to its original name of "Chicka-asha." On January 25, 1951, Mayor Harry Wirths dedicated the first section of Interstate 35 within Chickasha limits - this would later become I-35W - and announced that Chicaza would be one of five towns located within Tulsa metropolitan area that would receive highway extensions during this time period (the other four being Catoosa Hills/Normanwood/Tulsa). On October 12, 1957 – two years after I-35W opened to traffic – Chicaza’s first store opened when Piggly Wiggly moved from its previous site on Second Street into what is now Main Street downtown. This marked another milestone in Chicaza’s progress as a vibrant community with popular stores and businesses throughout its core areas dating back to its incorporation in 1906! On November 9th 1969 – also two years after I-35Wopenedto traffic – Chicaza celebrated its centennial anniversary when events took place including streetcars running down Third Street between Elm and Commerce Streets; performances by popular local bands including Bluegrass Boys & Girls featuring Leadbelly on saxophones; chili cookoffs;and dances were held in several different venues throughout downtown!
The Chickasha, Oklahoma land grant was given to the Wichita family in 1836. The Chickasha community was established on what is now called the west side of Chickasha Creek. The first white man to visit the area was James Eastman in 1840. In 1847, a post office and school were founded at Chickasha. A railroad was built through the area in 1876 and by 1889, Chickasha had a population of 350 people. By 1905, the town had shrunk to 25 residents and by 1912 it had dissolved into poverty.
