In 1912, a sawmill and lumberyard were built in Chickasha and in 1918, a hospital was opened in town. A tire factory was operated in the early 1920s but it closed down due to prohibition. In 1923, a two-story hotel called the Fairview Hotel was built in town and it remained an active business until 1971 when it went out of business.
Chickasha, Oklahoma is a small town located in the extreme western corner of Oklahoma. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County seat, McAlester. The community sits on the east side of US Highway 169 and is bordered to the north by Hells Creek Canyon National Preserve. To the south is McIntosh County and to the west are Tulsa and Osage counties. The Chickasha post office was established in 1907 and closed in 1957. The first settler in Chickasha was Fenton Witherspoon, who arrived with his family from Illinois in 1881. Witherspoon's son, George A. Witherspoon, founded a cattle ranch here in 1905 which he named "Hells Creek Canyon." In 1910 Fenton Witherspoon's grandson, Jameson Hatton Witherspoon became owner of this Rancho Apache de los Angeles del Norte which extended into Osage county east of Chickasha proper. He also acquired title to all land south of McAlester between Lookout Mountain and Red Fork creek., including what is now Chickasha township (it was organized as a precinct on November 3rd, 1892). In 1924 Jameson Hatton Witherspoon sold his interest in Apache de los Angeles del Norte to E L White who had purchased it from Manuel Avila Lopez for $1 million dollars cash plus 10 percent ownership of any future interests therein; White reorganized Apache as an oil company entitled Apache Petroleum Company Limited with headquarters at Tulsa but operations throughout Oklahoma until its acquisition by Western Refining Company Limited effective January 1st 1917). At about this time too some residents began calling themselves "Chickashaians" although there wasn't actually such a place as Chickasha until about 1906 when it was platted by J P Rodgers & Brothers surveyors working for fertilizer manufacturer C M Weeden along Payette River southeast of McAlester under contract from US Land & Lease Co Ltd making it one mile wide by three miles long extending northeasterly up Payette River towards Chatanooga opposite present day Grady County line) Other early settlers were Captain S R Barton (1887-1946), Milton J Blevins (1889-1974), John P Gray (1893-1965), T G Slaughter(1897-1985) fatherof prominent rancher Harry Slaughter who built an old home still standing on Main Street near present day Grady High School.) A post office called Chickasha opened at this location on October 6th 1907 under whose jurisdiction it served until February 2nd 1958 when it closed due to consolidation within Muskogee County with four other towns - Allatoona, Arkadelphia, Pawhuskey and Thalia - forming area code 917 . On July 20th 1912 Indianola stagecoach driver Harry Slaughter met northern white farmer Charles Goodnight while driving fromMcAlester to Jenks where Goodnight would load goods for shipment back downriver that wintercosting Slaughter $10 per trip including fuel; slaughter married Goodnight's daughter Alice on December 12th 1912 at Methodist church near Jenks after dayslong engagement northwest boundaryline then current day Grady County line drawn along payette river bank just beyond today's town limits

Chickasha is a small town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Chickasha was founded in 1881 by settlers from Illinois and named for the Chickasaw word "Kechacha." The first store in Chickasha opened in 1883. A post office was established here in 1886, and the town prospered until 1907 when a series of natural disasters struck the area: a severe drought caused crop failures, which led to an economic decline; then-President Theodore Roosevelt visited Chickasha in 1906 and Selected it as one of his New Frontier towns; and finally, when oil discoveries were made nearby, industry grew rapidly but environmental damage ensued with increased use of gas wells and other industrial wastes that contributed to waterlogging. In 1912 Bigfork Dam impounded all runoff from adjacent ranching properties so that municipal services became available only through private individuals or companies operating reservoirs on privately owned land downstream (the original dam remains extant). In 1932 Chickasha incorporated as a city under its own government. However, this did not last long asOklahoma seceded from the United States during World War II; during the war time all aspects of local government were shifted to Tulsa while City Hall and many other buildings remained unoccupied because they were used by Tulsa police officers. After Oklahoma re-joined the US following World War II Chickasha reverted back to its former municipality status before gradually declining over the next few decades due largely toinethe influx of more recent residents who replaced those lost during wartime prosperity. In 2000 Census data revealed that Chickasha had dwindled to 1,924 residents although it still boasted an active business district including 254 businesses employing over 2,000 people. With no prospects for growth despite ample resources such as water availability and cheap land values within close proximity thereto,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Chickaisha has recently turned its attention towards reclamation efforts including new housing developments (including 3 new apartment complexes) along with support for arts & culture initiatives both inside & outside of school walls throughout its community.[10]
