The history of Chickasha begins with two men, George Witherspoon and James A. Hicks, who arrived in 1887 from Ohio and erected a log cabin on what is now known as Main Street. In 1893, when Haskell County was created, Chickasha became its capital. The first post office was established at Chickasha in 1896 and continued to serve until 1907. In 1922, Chickasha voted to become an unincorporated community within Haskell County; this decision was made because there were no businesses or residents willing to invest in developing the community. The first school building in chickusha was built in 1925; it served as the local government's primary school until 1978 when Cherokee High School replaced it. In 1976, Chickasha voters approved the erection of a new school building which would be used for both Chisholm Junior-Senior High School and district offices. The new facility opened for use in 1979 and has been used ever since as the primary school for both Chisholm Junior-Senior High School and Haskell County Schools District #1 (grades 9-12).

In 1923, Chickasha reverted back to its Native American name of Anadarko after being renamed Chisholm City by then-Governor Charles A. Curtis.
