Chickasha is a town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. Chickasha is located on the Arkansas River near its confluence with the Kansas River. It is also within the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Chickasha were French Canadians who had been driven out of their homes by Indian hostilities in the late 1830s. In 1836, a wagon train of Mormons - led by Brigham Young - crossed the Arkansas River and arrived in Chickasha. Soon after, other settlers began arriving from Missouri and Illinois, bringing with them their own varieties of corn and beans. In 1839, an act was passed by Congress providing for new counties to be formed in present-day Payne and Teller Counties; these were named for George Payne (1789-1847), Governor of Arkansas Territory during that period, as well as James Teller (1809-1875), Senator from Colorado during that same time period. As part of this act, Chickasha was included within Paynesville Township. Reverend John Emmett built a log cabin here circa 1840 while preaching his religious gospel north of present day downtown Chickasha. After building one or two cabins here for himself and his family until he arrived at what is now called "Moses Cabin", Emmett started construction on what would become known as "Emmett's Depot" around 1845/46 when he became aware that there was no post office at that point inside or outside of Payne County! As more settlers came into town over time it quickly grew into a busy transportation hub due to its location on both banks of the Arkansas River; henceforth it became known as "Chickasha". soon after numerous Native American attacks against white civilians ensued which forced many residents to flee their homes including Reverend Emmett who tried unsuccessfully to rebuild his home back up on Poteau Creek before finally moving away some years later en route to Lafayette Texas where he died aged 86 years old on October 16th 1889? Ulysses S Grant made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the river at this point early evening on November 2nd 1865 while leading 1st Corps cavalry under general Ulysses S Grant southward towards Fort Gibson northeast of present day Wichita Fallshearths along today's US Highway Pyro Bluff Road just east of Interstate 35W exit 36A about 10 miles west from modern day Chicot City . This event helped earn him reputation among Cowboys as being very brave even though General Grant only moved about 6 miles west from Hutchinson dam which then ran atopaha Hills creating bluffs above Hutchinson Reservoir making possible easy crossing...
