Broken Arrow is a city in Pushmataha County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 20,715 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pushmataha County. The city was founded in 1867 and named after General John A. Ferguson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Oklahoma Territory. The first post office in Broken Arrow was established on July 2, 1867, under the name of Rushville. On October 13, 1870, a new post office called Crawfordsville was opened by James Crawford with headquarters at what is now Sells Auditorium on Western Avenue. In 1881, Broken Arrow became an independent municipality when it annexed part of Guthrie City. The original town hall still stands today and serves as the municipal center for both cities today. In 1907, Broken Arrow merged with Guthrie City to form a new metropolitan area which became known as Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In 1968 Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area dissolved and Broken Arrow reverted to its own MSA status once again within Pushmataha County. Broken Arrow has experienced significant growth throughout its history; from 1% of its population in 1880 to over 50% by 1990 thanks to annexation into other municipalities along the way! Broken Arrow was founded by pioneers in 1889 as a small community on the east side of what is now known as Tulsa. The city's original name was "Eagle Butte". In 1907, it became part of Tulsa when that city was annexed by Oklahoma. The first post office in Broken Arrow opened in 1890 and closed in 1901. The first store opened in 1893 and lasted until 1907. The second store, which operated from 1912 to 1915, was built on Third Street between Union and Robinson streets NW. It contained a grocery, hardware store, blacksmith shop, barber shop and mail order service. A power plant operated near the town for many years until it burned down in 1951 while repair work was being done on the plant; however, rebuilt later that same year on First National Bank property (now called Crescent Heights), it continued to provide electricity until 1977 when it went out due to drought conditions affecting much ofOklahoma City at that time. In 1906–07, Broken Arrow joined forces with Pottawatomie County to form an agricultural cooperative known as "The Valley" Cooperative Extension Service program aimed at increasing production throughout central Oklahoma including Broken Arrow through marketing methods such as subscribing to local magazines and receiving referrals from other farmers who had successfully grown crops there under similar cooperative auspices during those early years]. That group helped establish markets for vegetables, fruits and grains throughout most of eastern Oklahoma where access thereto had not yet been developed even though these products were then very popular among Oklahomans because they could be prepared fresh or frozen [the focus] . . . Our nurserymen have brought forth wonderful fruit trees here this season which will provide us with food for winter months’ use also we are working on a Nursery Department consisting of Seed Storage Shipments for our customers direct from our growers ] resulted primarily from subscriptions received from farmers who subscribed to Agricultural Newsletters produced by various organizations within Tulsa County Membership included men employed either directly or indirectly by farm owners through their employesgents
