Broken Arrow is a town in Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1907 by settlers who were displaced by the 1906 Oklahoma City earthquake. The post office was established in 1909 and the first store opened in 1911. The name Broken Arrow comes from an Indian word meaning "bad water." A dam was built to control the White River in 1914 and Brokaw Lake was formed. In 1922, a school was built and named for Capt. John Brokaw, who had fought with Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Oklahoma Territory. In 1928, Broken Arrow incorporated as a city under state law; it had no voting power until 1959 when it became one of six cities within Tulsa County to have voting rights statewide. In 1987, after years of negotiation, Broken Arrow became an elected township with full jurisdiction over all its residents subject only to tax collection and spending authority within municipal boundaries; this change allowed for more job growth and development outside of downtown while still maintaining strong community ties within the township itself (see Township government). In 2003, Broken Arrow annexed nearby rural townships including Park Hills and Rainbow because they lacked their own elected officials or funding sources to support infrastructure projects such as fire protection or Transportation Authority service; these annexations fulfilled needs that had been neglected by previous administrations due to budgetary limitations (see Annexation policy). Broken Arrow was founded in 1876 as a railway town by businessmen and railroad officials for people working on the new Wichita, Kansas Railway. In 1865, the Union army moved into Oklahoma Territory after winning the Civil War. The area was heavily contested and many battles were fought before finally settling in to what is now Broken Arrow. The city was first established as a trading post by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in 1867. It grew rapidly due to its location, access to water resources, and easy access to transportation. The town became an important center for trade and commerce during the years following it was founded. In 1907, Broken Arrow incorporated as a municipality. It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to the influx of soldiers and their families who came through the area for service. After the war ended, economic prosperity declined until late 1960s when new industrial development began taking hold in the city.
