Broken Arrow, Oklahoma is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma and the county seat of Barnes County. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Barnes County by population. It is also one of two cities in Tulsa County-the other being Tulsa-and one of only three cities in the state of Oklahoma with a population over 1 million people. The town site was chosen for its strategic location as it lay upon an Indian trail that connected present day Wichita, Kansas to Muskogee and northern Creek towns upriver. The land for Broken Arrow was purchased from the Osage Nation by Matthias Corbin in 1854 in order to establish a trading post on what would become known as Corbin's Landing (now downtown Broken Arrow). The town began to grow rapidly following its establishment and by 1875 had reached its current size. By 1915, Broken Arrow had become an independent city under the name of Tulsa after becoming an integral part of that county's government during Reconstruction following American Civil War efforts to reestablish white authority over allOklahoma Territory. Broken Arrow experienced significant growth during World War II when millionsigrations occurred within Tulsa County due to World War II military production requirements across both Tulsa and Texas which led to increased industrial activity around Broken Arrow including aircraft production which helped contribute significantly to local economic development throughout the war years. After WWII ended, many small businesses closed down because they could not compete with larger companies who were located elsewhere; however, a few large companies such as McDonnell Douglas continued operations until their bankruptcy in 2001 leaving behind much unused infrastructure and associated jobs including those at Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., General Electric Co., Hewlett-Packard Co., and AT&T Inc.; among others In 1987, Tulsans decided that their city should have its own public library system which became operational in 1993 under then Mayor Phil Bredesen and City Manager Don Hebert In 1996 Borough President Glen King formed a committee looking into ways to improve civic amenities such as parkland and redesigned streets leading into town center; this Committee eventually recommended approval for a new downtown core which became reality just two years later on November 4th 1997 when voters passed an ordinance authorizing issuance of $25 million bond issue for projects including renovations/updates to existing buildings inside or adjacent thereto as well as new construction including a new library building along I-40/Upper Broadway Street In 2001 City Manager Don Hebert resigned after six months on the job due primarily to family health problems; he was succeeded by his predecessor Art Lundquist who continued working until his retirement effective January 1st 2006 On October 5th 2006 Mayor Phil Bredesen announced plans for redevelopment of portions north side of I-40 between McDowell Road eastward through Midtown Boulevard southward into Walnut Hills; this project would be known as "Motor CITY" & included replacement or renovation/updates totalling $206 million cost resulting from voter approval April 14th 2007 As parte thereof Mayor Bredesen also announced intentions for annexation of unincorporated areas lying east & southeast of Interstate 40 yards eastward thereto comprising approximately 500 acres total area subjecting these lands back onto municipal jurisdiction
