In 1907, Bixby resident W. H. Beattie founded the Western rifle company in what is now downtown Bixby. Over the years, the company became one of the most successful in the country, manufacturing rifles and shotguns for a variety of customers including law enforcement, hunting and target shooting enthusiasts, and military users. In 1912, Beattie moved his business to an expanded building on Main Street in what is now downtown Bixby. Bixby, Oklahoma is a small city in the Tulsa metropolitan area and it has been home to people from as early as 1847. The first post office in Bixby was established on December 6, 1847. The town was named for John Bixby, who settled in the area in 1851. By 1893, Bixby had a population of just over 1,000 people and it became an agricultural center. However, the town's growth slowed after World War II when more developed areas were established nearby. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, Bixby began to experience growth again due to its location close to Tulsa and its access to Interstate 35. As of 2010, the city has a population of over 21,000 people. The history of Bixby begins with settlers arriving in what is now Tulsa County during the 1830s. One early settler was John Bixby who arrived in 1847 and founded a farm that became known as Big Springs Ranch. It is thought that John may have been inspired by his friend William Hennepin who had traveled through this area earlier that year on his way to establish Wichita County west of Oklahoma City. By 1850, there were already 3 settlements located within present-day Tulsa County - Big Springs Ranch being one of them - with additional settlements being established throughout what is now eastern Oklahoma into the 1860s including at Graysville (now Muskettsboro), Texas; Vinita (now Vinita Hills); and Eufaula (now Altadena). During the late 1800s various towns started sprouting up all around Tulsa due to increased railroad activity along I-35 which made transportation easier for farmers and businesses compared to traveling by horse or wagon across open country. This also led to new residential subdivisions being built throughout downtown Tulsa which quickly outgrew those located north of 15th Street NW which would become known as "the business district." Development continued apace until World War II when many rural residents left for jobs in larger cities such as Dallas or Wichita Falls because politics became more important than agriculture following world war I; however industry did continue expanding thanks largely to oil discoveries during Prudential's well drilling campaign which lead directly to Tulsa becoming one of America's leading metropolises during this time period; today’s skyline can be creditable partly due diligence by developers prior to Oil bust coupled with current economic conditionsomplicating land acquisition costs making development difficult even 50 years later
Bixby, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by Luther Bixby and his wife Anna. The town was named for Anna's deceased father, Bixby Senior. In 1915, the town became a city and was renamed Bixby after Luther Bixby Jr. In 1928, the City of Tulsa merged with Bixby to form one municipality.
