These cannons fired small rounds that could be easily shot with a bow and arrow. In 1911, the Bixby Gun Manufacturing Company was founded by J.W. Bixby and his brother-in-law, Augustus Gentry. This company made guns thatfired .45 ACP rounds which were known as the “Old West Guns”. The company continued making these weapons until it ceased operations in 1951. During its time of operation, the Bixby Gun Manufacturing Company produced over 1,000guns including pistols, revolvers and shotguns. The use of firearms has always been an important part of society in Bixby, Oklahoma. Bixby, Oklahoma is a small town in the western United States. It lies on the edge of the Tulsa metropolitan area and is located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Tulsa. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1907 by Methodists who named it for their minister, Benjamin Bixby. The name change to Bixby in 1912 when oil reserves were discovered nearby. A post office was established in 1909 and remained in operation until 1935. In 1955, the town incorporated and began to function as an independent municipality. In 1959, a large oil field was discovered within walking distance of Bixby and soon production from the field began to persuade residents to move into the town. By 1966, there were more than 1,000 people living in Bixby with a full-time municipal government which included police services and firefighting capabilities. The now defunct Oil Field Service Company provided gas exploration services around this time and drilling took place both off-shore (1971) and onshore (1975). In 1992, after years of negotiations between local officials and producers of natural gas located adjacent to the OGS wellhead network, local voters approved an ordinance establishing a municipally owned energy company which would sell power generated from natural gas operations within its boundaries directly to consumers without going through private utility companies or distributors. The company became known as Energy Oklahoma Incorporated (EONI). In 2002 EONI merged with another municipally owned energy company, Northwest Energy Corporation (NEC), creating an even larger municipally OwnedEnergy Utility Authority which continues today as Energy Oklahoma Incorporated - OUenergy (@OEBInergy) subsidiary responsible for all aspects of electricity distribution & marketing inside & outside OFA's service territory including: Electric Delivery System Operator; Power Marketing Districts; Municipal Light Rail Authority; Water Supply Districts

In 1916, the town had a population of 100 people and by 1920, it had increased to 350 people. In 1922, the first school opened in Bixby and in 1924, the first hospital opened in the area. The city hall was built in 1928 and is still used today.In 1949, a swimming pool was built on West Elm Street which served as the town's primary water source until 1955 when an underground well began supplying water from under Oklahoma City. On October 20th of that year, local residents voted to change their name to Bixby after incorporation into the city limits of Oklahoma City
