Bixby, Oklahoma is a city in Oklahoman County and the seat of the county government. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern part of the state on the border of Choctaw and Kiowa counties. The town began as a small settlement called Bixbyville on May 25, 1892, by John W. Bixby and his family. In 1907, it became an organized town with a post office and two stores. The name was changed to Bixby on November 14, 1916, when it became one of ninety towns in Oklahoma that were given names based on Agriculture Commissioner James M. Webb's suggestion. The city was founded by John W. Bixby along with his brother-in-law Ira Hutton and their families in 1892 after they decided to move from Muskogee to start anew in what is nowOklahoma Territory following the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature's decision to create Choctaw County from territory east of Nome that had been donated by Native American Chief Osage during Reconstruction days. At its founding, Bixbyville had three store buildings and twenty residents; it grew to include six stores and over 100 residents by 1908 when it voted to become an organized town under territorial law passed that year despite objections from some members of the community who felt they were too close to Muskogee for business purposes only being able to visit once or twice a month due to transportation difficulties shared between those cities combined while also having their own Post Office which served their respective communities separately from each other at that time (the first OKPost office opened in 1907).
