Bixby, Oklahoma is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The name Bixby comes from the Choctaw word bik-bee-tuh which means "a place where there are many trees." The first permanent settler in what would become Bixby was James Hance who arrived in 1876 and named his land for his friend and mentor General Lew Wallace. By 1893, there were over 100 residents living in Bixby. In 1899, a post office was established at Bixby with Wm J. White as its firstpostmaster. In 1907, Jno A. Hillman purchased 320 acres (12 km²) of land south of town and founded the city of Hillman on this property which became known as downtown Bixby. At that time it consisted of only two streets and one jail/prison block with a population of about twenty people. In 1916 Mayor Fenton Morrison set up an election committee to run all fifty precincts in Haskell County to determine who should be elected county prosecutor for four years starting November 1st 1916 until May 15th 1918 pursuant to an act entitled "An Act Relative To Elections And Incorporation Of Haskell County" approved by the Oklahoma Legislature on October 16th 1915 A new courthouse was built on Main Street between Elm and Hickory Streets in 1920 after plans were drawn up by architects George Ladd & Sons based on designs by renowned American architect Norman Rockwell who had come to Tulsa to film a movie aboutOklahoma Indians called The Thundering Heroes In 1922 construction began on First Presbyterian Church across from State Fairgrounds - now known as First Baptist Church - with pastor Rev Dr John Sutherlin officiating the first service . When finished it was America's largest Lutheran church and remains so today On January 10th 1923 Fenton Morrison died suddenly aged sixty-one years after serving as mayor for six terms including two full terms successively It was not until 1957 when Claymore Air Force Base opened that Bixby started seeing some growth beyond just its core community due to military activity associated with that base along with other businesses located nearby such as ITT Corporation (now Lockheed Martin), Boeing Airplanes and Texas Instruments among others giving rise to what is now known as downtown Bixby Business District Claymore AFB closed down in 1991 following Operation Desert Storm leaving behind a large vacant lot next to Interstate 40 which served as both commercial center for surrounding areas while also hosting various government offices such as county courts etc before being sold off again in 2001 becoming home to Kansas City Star retail store until finally being vacated by developers in late 2017 having failed to meet code requirements for size, density or character
