The area around present day Bixby was first settled by Paleo-Indians about 12000 years ago according to archaeologist Drs John Lubbock and Richard Armitage who excavated at Fort Gibson during 1905/06 season along withDr Ernest Renfrew who did field work at Pawhuska between 1901-1902 mostly near crossing of Red River where latter found abandoned village site having Post Office (now City Hall) which he named "Pioneer Village" after American Land Company's agent George Aiken who visited territory prior to1896 When US Army closed fort Gibson 1894 all soldiers were ejected except Lt Edward Fenton whose family moved 117 miles NWOklahoma city okla also Ft Gibson post office continued until 1907 when it closed with all goods removed including mules then General Order No 3 said "all Soldiers must Leave without Property no matter how good may be their excuse" This order led same year Genl Order No 4 which banned Plains Indians from entering military any longer bordered on Indian Territory so they stayed here until 1865 when they surrendered at Head Quarters Camp CreekComanche Agency when Major Thomas Ewing took over command Santa Fe Trail Battalion 5th Cavalryattachée under Major James WilkinsonDodge road today Gadsden avenue now Today much off limits land still remains unclaimed by either Tribe or Government but plenty potential exists for both if proper planning done In 1881 William Haxbys home stood on what is now called Main Street east side of forest .
